Giving Myself Grace

It’s been a few months since I wrote a post.

And honestly? Grace is Needed… for myself.

Because let’s be real. Life happened.

School started. Then school activities. Then dishes. Then laundry. Then work. Then the holidays. Then more school activities. Then work. Then laundry. Then dishes. Then cleaning the house. Then washing uniforms that somehow need washed after being worn for approximately 14 minutes. Then figuring out what’s for dinner. Then realizing everyone is hungry every single day. Then signing forms. Then finding shoes. Then asking, “Who took my charger?” Then repeating all of that forever until the end of time.

And somehow here we are… the end of April.

And I miss writing.

Because sometimes as a mom, you wake up one day and realize you’ve slowly handed out every little piece of yourself to everyone else. A ride here. A snack there. A signed permission slip. A clean towel. A pep talk. A meal. A reminder. A hug. A Venmo. A ride again.

And one day you think… wait. Where did I go?

How are women supposed to do all of this?

Be deeply involved moms. Build careers. Keep climbing the ladder. Be present at every game, concert, meeting, and practice. Keep the house running. Order the groceries. Remember birthdays. Keep relationships healthy. Drink enough water. Stay in shape. Be emotionally available. And somehow also “take time for ourselves.”

Sure. Sounds reasonable.

And I’m not saying this for sympathy, because truthfully, being a mom is my favorite role. I love showing up for my kids. I love creating home. I love doing the things that make our family feel cared for.

But somewhere in the middle of loving everyone else well… we still have to remember ourselves.

Because losing yourself doesn’t happen dramatically. It happens quietly.

It happens in the constant doing.
The constant giving.
The constant being needed.

So how do we fix it?

I could tell you to wake up at 5 a.m. and meditate.
I could tell you to exercise before sunrise.
I could tell you to stay up late and journal after everyone goes to bed.

But is that really “your time”… or are you just squeezing yourself into the leftover crumbs of the day?

Maybe the answer isn’t some perfect routine.

Maybe it’s smaller than that.

Maybe it’s asking:
What makes me feel like me?

Writing for 15 minutes.
A walk outside.
Coffee on the porch.
Music in the kitchen.
Reading a chapter.
Planting flowers.
Laughing with a friend.
Driving in silence.
Sitting in your car for five extra minutes before going inside because honestly… fair.

This morning I thought about all of this and told myself, Just take 15 minutes and write. See what happens.

And maybe that’s the trick.

Not waiting for hours of free time that never come.
Not waiting for life to slow down.
Not waiting for perfect balance.

Just finding five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes.

And using it to come back to yourself.

So if you’ve felt a little lost lately, a little buried under responsibilities, a little more like a machine than a person…

Give yourself grace.

You are still in there.

Sometimes she just needs fifteen uninterrupted minutes… and nobody asking where their socks are.
