From Gas Guzzler to Electric: Tips for Switching to a Tesla in Small-Town America

โ€”

We did it โ€” we traded in our GMC Yukon XL (a certified gas guzzler) for a brand new 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper Launch Series. Yep, we went from filling up that massive tank every week to plugging in overnight while we sleep. And the best part? We live in the middle of the countryside, 45 minutes from the nearest Tesla Supercharger. If we can figure this out way out here, trust me, you can too.

So if youโ€™re on the fence about ditching gas for electric โ€” especially if you live rural like us โ€” here are my top tips to make the switch smoother than a Tesla autopilot lane change:

1๏ธโƒฃ Install Your Home Charger Before Your Tesla Arrives
This one is huge. Learn from our mistake: we didnโ€™t have our charger plug installed when we brought the car home. That first week was brutal โ€” crawling by with a regular household outlet that barely charged the battery overnight. Battery anxiety is real when youโ€™re new to EVs, and youโ€™ll sleep better knowing you have a fast charger ready to go. Do yourself a favor: get that Level 2 charger or upgraded outlet installed before delivery day.

2๏ธโƒฃ Use Tesla Support โ€” Theyโ€™re Awesome
I had about a million questions โ€” probably silly ones โ€” but Teslaโ€™s support team never made me feel that way. From setting up our test drive to helping with the trade in, they were top-notch. The chat in the app is amazing, too. Donโ€™t be afraid to call or message them โ€” theyโ€™re genuinely helpful.

3๏ธโƒฃ Take the Test Drive (and Donโ€™t Panic if You Feel Weird!)
Confession: I actually got a little car sick on our first test drive. Turns out thatโ€™s not uncommon โ€” Teslas drive very differently than what youโ€™re probably used to. The instant acceleration and regenerative braking can throw you off at first. I almost changed my mind then and there, but I stuck it out โ€” and found โ€œChill Modeโ€ in the settings. Total game changer while you get used to it.

4๏ธโƒฃ Watch the YouTube Videos
Some Tesla YouTubers have been at this a while โ€” but their tips really helped us figure things out fast. From how to use Autopilot to little tricks for road trips, YouTube has it all. Grab your popcorn and start binging.

5๏ธโƒฃ Download the Tesla App Immediately
The Tesla app is your new best friend. It walked us through everything step by step โ€” and we even shifted our vehicle pickup to another state because the paperwork process was smoother. The app tells you everything from where your car is parked to how much charge youโ€™ll have left when you reach your destination. Pure peace of mind.

6๏ธโƒฃ Ask All the Questions โ€” Seriously
We asked so many questions, and it paid off. From registration quirks to how to get the most range out of each charge, every answer made us feel more confident. Thereโ€™s no such thing as a dumb Tesla question.

Life with a Tesla in the Countryside

We werenโ€™t sure if an EV would work for our rural Midwest life, but here we are โ€” figuring it out and loving it. Weโ€™re about to take our first 8-hour road trip this month. Yes, it takes more planning (Supercharger stops are now part of our itinerary), but the savings are real: weโ€™ve saved over $1,500 already. And every morning I wake up to what feels like a full tank of gas โ€” but itโ€™s 80% charge instead.

Some of Our Favorite Tesla Features

  • Carioke (yes, karaoke in the car โ€” our kids love it)
  • Seat farts (if you know, you know)
  • Built-in navigation to find Tesla chargers
  • Trip planner that estimates charge left when you arrive
  • Sentry Mode security cameras โ€” great peace of mind
  • Camping Mode โ€” weโ€™ve even slept overnight in the car!

Switching from a big gas SUV to a Tesla felt scary at first, but now it feels like we upgraded to the future. The tech is incredible, the driving is fun, and the cost savings make us wonder why we didnโ€™t do this sooner.

If youโ€™re thinking about going electric โ€” especially if youโ€™re rural like us โ€” I promise: you can figure it out, too. Plan ahead, ask questions, and enjoy the ride.

We 100% recommend it. We have had a blast and are still learning!
